Terre Haute fabrication facility produces steel for Union Hospital Project

Indianapolis, IN (March 20, 2008): - Fanfare greeted the delivery and placement of the first steel beams at Union Hospital this week marking the beginning of the structural phase of the $178 million construction project. The 492,000 square foot, five story structure will utilize 2,400 tons of steel to complete the job. That steel is being fabricated by Indianapolis based, Lenex Steel, in its Terre Haute fabrication facility.

Lenex acquired the former Interstate Welding & Fabrication building in July 2006 and invested $3.5 million dollars in equipment and building improvements. The Terre Haute facility currently employs 57 workers and produces approximately 30,000 tons of steel annually. It is one of the largest fabrication facilities in the state and accounts for three-fourths of Lenex’s overall production capacity.

"When we purchased the Terre Haute plant, we expressed interest in working on the Union Hospital expansion project," notes Lenex President, Mike Berghoff. "We are working on a similar project with Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis and knew our experience would translate into opportunity to support work within our own business community. We were very excited to supply steel for the Union Hospital project."

During the course of the nearly two-year construction project, 600-800 trade workers will be involved in the various construction phases of the project. Lenex project manager, Kevin Emmert, will work in conjunction with the overall project teams from Garmong Construction and Pepper Construction to coordinate the steel erection phase, which is scheduled for completion in October. A live web cam is available through Union Hospital's web site, www.uhhg.org . Visitors can click on the construction button to track the project's progress.

Lenex Steel was founded in 2003 to provide fabricated steel and engineering design services for the construction industry. The company maintains its headquarters in Indianapolis. It also operates a second fabrication facility in Indianapolis. Its current project portfolio includes the Carmel City Center, Riley Children's Hospital Simon Family Tower, and Hubble Middle School.
