Lenex Introduces Comprehensive Safety Initiative

Indianapolis, IN (August 2007) - Lenex recently launched a comprehensive safety program establishing safety guidelines for subcontractors working with Lenex on jobsites. Under the guidance of Allen Hanavan, Director of Risk Management, the program covers field safety, shop safety, compliance, enforcement, and training for Lenex field operations and fabrication facilities.

Structural steel fabrication and steel erection requires working with heavy steel beams on large construction sites with multiple subcontractors. Safety is a critical component to the process during manufacturing, delivery, and installation.

"Our job does not end with the fabrication process. We are also involved when the steel is delivered to the site," notes Allen Hanavan. "This important initiative will communicate Lenex safety standards to our suppliers and subcontractors and provides an incentive based reward system designed to reward erectors for working safely."

The purpose of the safety program is to mitigate accident risk at Lenex production facilities and at the worksite, to reduce liability and risk to Lenex and its suppliers, and to provide a higher level of service to Lenex clients.

The Lenex program includes a full-time safety officer supervising the program, outside consultation, an erection safety manual, erector audits, jobsite inspection, and safety incentives.

One of the unique aspects of the program involves erector audits. Lenex will utilize a 20-point evaluation strategy to create an audit scorecard and ranking. Information is then stored in a DB02 database for analysis and trend tracking. A minimum of three site visits will be made to complete the analysis report. Findings are communicated through progress letters to the jobsite's project manager and site superintendent.

"We believe this service offering is unique within our industry," comments Lenex President Mike Berghoff. "While safety is a well-understood component of our industry, it is unusual to find this type of initiative coming from a steel fabricator when it comes to on the job site safety.""

Allen Hanavan developed and manages the overall safety program. He is currently scheduling safety briefings with Lenex clients to educate them on the new incentive-based Subcontractor Safety System.
