News 2 / WKRN - TV Nashville - Nashville, TN (June 13, 2011): The city's new convention center, currently under construction in downtown Nashville just south of the Bridgestone Arena, is now a third of the way complete and on schedule to open in less than two years. Holly McCall, spokeswoman for the half billion dollar Music City Center, told Nashville's News 2 most of the concrete, or 110,000 cubic yards, has been poured The amount is nearly twice the amount used in nearby LP Field. This week, McCall said workers are scheduled to hoist several parts of a giant truss, which forms support for the roof on the highest part of the facility. Senior Safety Supervisor Randy Brook said that four huge jacks would be used to place the truss.

On any given day, dozens of workers can be seen doing a high wire act guiding beams into place. "[All of the workers] are all harnessed," explained Brook, who added that when all the beams are in place, more than 11,000 tons of steel will have been used. The facility, with parking areas included, will be just over two-million square feet. The highest point of the 16-acre site will be 15-stories tall. Construction is expected to be complete by spring 2013.

Lenex Steel assembled trusses into modules weighing over 790,000 pounds and lifted them into place using strand jacks. The complex design, incorporating a rolling double-pitched roof and an elevated roof in the shape of a guitar required over 13,000 tons of structural steel.
