Lenex Steel Awarded $30 Million Contract to Provide Steel for Indiana Convention Center Expansion

INDIANAPOLIS – Lenex Steel, an Indianapolis-based steel fabricator, has been awarded the structural steel contract for the Indiana Convention Center expansion project, estimated at $30 million.

Lenex Steel will provide 8,000 tons of structural steel and trusses, stairs, beams and columns for the project. Preliminary work will begin in the fall, with the bulk of the steel being delivered in spring 2009. Lenex’s fabrication facility in Terre Haute, Ind., will manufacture the bulk of the steel for the project. This same plant manufactured the steel trusses for the last Convention Center expansion project.

When completed in 2010, the $275 million expansion, combined with the new Lucas Oil Stadium, will increase the amount of exhibition, meeting room, ballroom and pre-function space in the Indiana Convention Center from 725,000 square feet to more than 1.2 million square feet.

Lenex Steel was the only local bidder for the project. Other bids came from steel fabricators in St. Louis, Georgia, and Phoenix, Ariz.

Lenex has provided the structural steel for three of the four recent major downtown Indianapolis building projects since 2005:

  • Convention Center expansion, 8,000 tons of steel
  • Riley Children’s Hospital Simon Tower Expansion, 6,000 tons of steel
  • Simon Headquarters, steel for the 14-story, 350,000-square-foot building

Additional projects that use Lenex Steel are the new Union Hospital in Terre Haute, and the new St. Elizabeth East Hospital facility in Lafayette, Ind.

Lenex Steel is an Indianapolis-based steel fabricator and full service design/build firm that provides structural and miscellaneous steel for projects throughout the region.
